Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT), also known as Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), is a hands on, experiential approach that combines interaction with horses and professional guidance to support emotional growth, mental wellness, and personal development. Participants engage directly with horses through structured activities such as grooming, leading, observing herd behaviour, and, when appropriate, riding. These activities provide a safe and non judgmental environment where participants can explore emotions, build self awareness, develop confidence, and improve communication skills. By reflecting on their experiences with the guidance of a qualified allied health professional, participants gain practical insights and coping strategies that extend beyond the therapy sessions, fostering meaningful and lasting personal growth.
Safely explore your feelings and experiences with professional guidance in each session. This structured approach helps participants process emotions, develop coping strategies, and build resilience. Over multiple sessions, participants gain deeper insight into their emotional patterns.
Through consistent, hands on interaction with horses, participants develop practical life skills, strengthen self confidence, and understand their own behaviours and responses. Regular sessions allow participants to notice real progress and reinforce self belief.
Horses respond honestly and intuitively to body language, providing immediate, authentic feedback. This helps participants build trust, improve non verbal communication, and deepen connections. Over time, participants learn to approach relationships with increased empathy and patience.
Every session is tailored to the participantâs goals, comfort level, and pace. This approach ensures participants feel understood, supported, and encouraged, creating a more rewarding experience. Tailored attention allows focus on areas that matter most to each individual.
All sessions are facilitated by qualified allied health professionals with specialist equine therapy training. Participants can feel confident knowing they are in a safe, structured, and expert-guided environment. This support allows participants to fully engage without fear or hesitation.
A consistent series of sessions allows participants to reinforce skills, track improvements, and achieve tangible outcomes. Attending all five sessions ensures continuous learning and long-term growth that a single session cannot provide.
1. Goal Setting : Before sessions commence, the therapist works closely with each client (or their guardian) to identify therapeutic goals and ensure activities are tailored to suit their individual needs.
2. Horse Interaction : Depending on the clientâs comfort level and the therapy goals, activities may include brushing, walking, leading, observing herd behaviour, or, in some cases, mounted riding. Every interaction is designed to support emotional insight and skill development.
3. Reflective Processing : After working with the horses, clients are guided through a reflective process. They are encouraged to express what they observed, felt, or experienced and relate this back to real life challenges or relationships.
4. Building Skills for Life : Through these sessions, clients gain practical tools to improve emotional regulation, resilience, interpersonal relationships, and decision-making. These are skills that can carry over into school, work, home, and social environments.
A therapeutic intervention that uses interactions with horses to address emotional and psychological challenges. Ideal for individuals seeking mental health support in a non clinical setting.
While not psychotherapy, this program provides physical and emotional benefits through supervised riding activities. It can assist with balance, coordination, self-esteem, and sensory integration.
A clinical intervention led by a qualified allied health practitioner, using horse movement to support people with physical, sensory, or neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or brain injury.
Focused on personal development and leadership, EAL sessions are ideal for building communication skills, confidence, empathy, and teamwork in both individuals and groups.

1. Do I need any prior experience with horses to participate?
Not at all! All our sessions are designed with participant comfort in mind. Whether you’re totally new to horses or experienced, your facilitator will guide you at your own pace to ensure confidence and safety every step of the way.
2. Are the sessions safe?
Absolutely. The safety and wellbeing of participants and horses is our top priority. We use calm, well trained therapy horses and each session is overseen by professionals trained in equine assisted therapy. Environment, activities, and pace are all carefully managed to create a secure and supportive space.
3. What kinds of challenges can EAT help with?
EAT can support a wide range of emotional and developmental needs including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, ADHD, autism, emotional regulation and confidence building. Itâs also an effective, compassionate path for NDIS participants seeking holistic support.
4. Does a session include riding the horse?
Riding is optional and not required in all sessions. Many therapeutic outcomes are achieved through groundwork activities like grooming, leading, and herd observation. Riding is included only when appropriate to the participantâs goals and comfort level.
5. What does a typical 60-minute session look like?
A typical session includes goal setting with your facilitator, hands on time with the horse (e.g., grooming or leading), and guided reflection afterward. This structure ensures both practical and emotional insights, helping you connect lessons from the paddock to real life situations.
6.Why is a 5 session package the only option available, rather than a single session?
At Harmony Pastures, our focus is on providing participants with the best possible outcomes. A single session may feel helpful in the moment, but meaningful change takes time, consistency, and trust. The 5 session package is designed to create continuity and momentum allowing your facilitator and the horses to truly get to know you, track your progress, and build on each session. This structured approach ensures that the benefits are deeper, more sustainable, and genuinely life enhancing, rather than a short term experience.
